The Agbakara final contest was meant to be a celebration of strength and valor, but it became the catalyst for Serome’s downfall. When Ogaga emerged victorious, he shocked everyone by demanding Serome as his bride—despite her already being betrothed to the revered Okakuro.
To the horror of the elders and her fiancé, Serome did the unthinkable—she admitted that she would not mind being with Ogaga. Her words sent shockwaves through the land, humiliating the Okakuro and igniting outrage among the people.
A test of purity
Despite the disgrace, the Okakuro was willing to overlook Serome’s defiance, but only on one condition: she must prove her purity. The Ovie wasted no time in ordering a midwife to conduct the test.
Odiri, sensing danger, urged Serome to seek help from the Erivwin or use the goodwill she had earned from the widows to escape the test, as they both knew the truth—Serome had already lain with Ogaga. But Serome refused to deceive the gods, choosing instead to accept her fate.
A shocking revelation
When the results were announced, the entire kingdom was left stunned—Serome was not only no longer a virgin but also carrying Ogaga’s child. Even her closest friend, Odiri, was caught off guard by the revelation. The consequence was swift and brutal. As punishment for Serome’s crime, her maiden, Akpevwe, was gruesomely executed. Enraged, Serome lashed out at the council, answering their questions with open disdain, further infuriating the Ovie.
Serome pays the price of defiance
Despite pleas from her brother, Ogheneovo, and other respected voices, the Ovie remained resolute. Serome was officially banished from Oto Egba, the land she once called home, and forbidden from ever returning.
Will she find a new path, or will the gods intervene in her fate?
