Kevwe grew up in a patriarchal household where gender dictated values. Her father, Chief Odafe, a traditional and influential figure in the transport business, always longed for a male heir. So when her younger brother, Odafe Junior, was born, her father’s relief and preference were evident for all to see, especially Kevwe. As a young girl, she noticed her father’s indifference towards her and his attention to Junior. She watched him try to shape Junior into a son he could be proud of, and then she mirrored herself into what that looked like for his validation.
